Job Description Summary
About the Penn Libraries

The Penn Libraries provides a network of information resources and knowledge services that are vital to teaching, research, and learning at the University of Pennsylvania. This network includes 19 physical libraries, recognized for their collections, and a digital library known for innovation and richness of content. Through dynamic programming and exhibitions, and through the acquisition and preservation of literary and artistic artifacts, the Penn Libraries documents a wealth of social and historical periods, bringing scholarship to life at the University and in the various communities it serves.

Reporting to the Rare Book Cataloging Coordinator, the Project Special Collections Cataloging Librarian Cataloger will assist with the cataloging and care of the Caroline F. Schimmel Collection of Women in the American Wilderness, Jean-Franois Vilain and Roger S. Wieck Collection of Private Presses, Ephemera, & Related References, and the Running Press Collection for the Kislak Center for Special Collections. This is a temporary 3.5 year (42 months) appointment.

This position will:
  • Create original and complex copy cataloging records for materials and objects in a variety of formats including ephemera, realia, serials, kits and other non-book printed materials according to national rules and standards and by following locally defined cataloging policies, best practices and workflows
  • Contribute name authority records to NACO
  • Ensure quality control for the collections and perform data remediation projects in Alma
  • Work in collaboration with other divisions of the library to assist with preparation of materials for shelving and storage
  • Regularly contributing to the Unique at Penn blog

    • Perform additional duties as assigned


    Qualifications
    • An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science and 0-1 year of experience or equivalent education experience
    • Experience working with special collections
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Demonstrated time management skills
    • Familiarity with the MARC data format
    • Experience with OCLC Connexion Client
    • Experience cataloging in a library setting
    • Experience with Library of Congress Name Authorities
    • Experience with Library of Congress, RBMS, Getty AAT, and other controlled vocabularies
    • Bibliographic knowledge of one non-English language is beneficial

    Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
