POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
Full-time, 12-month, unclassified (AFT) position with expected work hours of 35 hours per week. Primarily hours are 8:30AM - 4:30PM, Monday through Friday. Work hours/shifts/days are subject to change regularly as directed by the supervisor to meet the operational needs of the unit. Evenings and weekend hours are also necessary based on programmatic needs.

The Jane Addams Papers Project is a multi-year documentary editing project sponsored by Ramapo College of New Jersey with a mission to create a digital edition of Addams's correspondence, diaries and writings covering 1901-1935, and publish Volumes 4-7 of the Selected Papers of Jane Addams. The Project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and others. Job Summary
The project seeks an assistant editor for a grant funded full-time position. The successful candidate will work in-person with the project's director at Ramapo College of New Jersey, in Mahwah, NJ. This position is not eligible for remote work. The assistant editor's responsibilities will primarily support work on the Jane Addams Digital Edition. Under the supervision of the Project Director, the Assistant Editor verifies transcriptions and metadata, supervises and trains student employees, conducts research, and assists in all phases of implementing editorial practice at the project. The Assistant Editor also assists with grants and project promotion.
Examples of Duties
  • Assist the editor with the development of editorial practice for both the Jane Addams Digital Edition (using Omeka Classic) and the Selected Papers of Jane Addams.
  • Verify transcriptions and Dublin Core metadata according to the editorial practices established by the Project.
  • Conduct biographical research and other related research for annotation and identification of topics related to Addams documents. This includes occasional archival research and travel to archival collections.
  • Train and supervise 10-15 undergraduate student workers in the creation of metadata and transcriptions. Run training sessions as needed.
  • Manage the Project's copyright search and clearance process.
  • Manage the Project's social media outreach, work with students and guest authors to develop content for the project website and social media posts.
  • Participate in scholarly conferences to advance the Project's profile.
  • Assist the editor with grant writing and reporting, review proposals, help identify new sources of funding.


Qualifications


Requirements
  • Master's Degree in history, library science, digital humanities, or a related field.
  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with diverse faculty, researchers, students, and staff.
  • Proficiency in general office computing.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Abilities
  • Experience working in documentary editing.
  • Experience with Omeka Classic and Dublin Core metadata standards.
  • Familiarity with women's history, the history of the Progressive Era, welfare history, or the history of the peace movement.
  • Experience in research skills, using newspaper, genealogy, and research databases.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and professional activity.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, contact management systems.
